North-south lineaments in the British Isles: a 1500 Myr record of reactivation

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract / Description of output

Re-examines the large-scale sedimentary, igneous and tectonic features of the British Isles and its surrounding continental shelf. Very long N-S geofracture lineaments are identifiable. Some linears show geological activity at the present day and some can be identified back to the mid-Proterozoic. The major features have a persistent N-S orientation (360±10°), suggesting that an extensionsal E-W stress field has been reactivated many times. Linears can also be identified with E-W, NW-SE, and NE-SW orientations, but are not discussed here in detail. Possible causes of the observed stress field are discussed. -after Author
