Numerical modelling of impulsive wave over-topping of coastal structures

Abstract

A 2-D plan shallow water numerical scheme is described for modelling wave over-topping of sloping sea walls. The scheme is high resolution and of Godunov type of the kind currently employed in the aerospace community and developed for applications in hydraulics. An HLL approximate Riemann solver is used in conjunction with slope limiting to provide accurate resolution of complex flow features. By casting the scheme in finite volume form computational efficiency is obtained by using a fine near shore mesh and a coarse far shore mesh. Over-topping discharges are obtained for a simple sea wall design and are compared to previous numerical and experimental results.
