Abstract
We present computer simulations of the interaction of NGC5194 and 5195
involving the gaseous, stellar and dark matter compnonents of the two
galaxies. Several observational features of NGC 5194 are reproduced
using orbital parameters close to the best guess from previous
calulations, including : 1) Broad stellar spiral arms 2) Narrow gaseous
spiral arms with strong shock velocity discontinuities 3) A bar-like
oval distortion in the central stellar bulge 4) Sharp bends in the
gaseous spiral arms 5) A long southern gaseous tail 6) A dense nuclear
gas ring Points (2), (3), (4) and (6) have not been reported in previous
computer simulations.
