Abstract

By combining regulatory elements derived from one gene with the coding sequence from another, it is now possible to direct the synthesis of a particular protein to a specific body tissue in a recombinant or 'transgenic' animal. This paper discusses the possibility that transgenic methodology may be applied to the production of human therapeutic proteins in farm animals. We review the feasibility of generating transgenic livestock, explore the possibility of harvesting human proteins, in quantity, from the milk of transgenic dairy animals, and examine the theoretical, technical and financial aspects of the approach.
