Abstract / Description of output

For Pirro Ligorio the images on coins were a mine of information on every aspect of antiquity. The paper will concentrate on his Oxford Codex to explore how he uses, or claims to use coins, to elucidate aspects of dress, weapons, statues and, especially, the form, location and identity of ancient Roman buildings. In most cases the coins are genuine but often he uses their evidence to reach erroneous conclusions.
An edition of the Oxford Codex prepared by Ian Campbell in 2014.
