Abstract

World Heritage Sites are monuments or historical sites recognized as having architectural, archaeological, cultural and natural values considered of Outstanding Universal Value and recognized by UNESCO in accordance with the Convention on the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by the United Nations General Conference for Education, Science and Culture on November 16, 1972. Nomination of a site for inclusion in the World Heritage List means a responsibility to protect and manage it so that future generations can enjoy these cultural values. The Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention calls for the development of a Protection and Management Program (also called a Management Plan) to ensure this. This study examines the implementation process of the protection and management program required by UNESCO for all these sites, and refers to the problems and opportunities facing the sites. It also contributed to the correlation of the relationship between the protection and management program document, the implementation on the spot of the actions and the system of monitoring in time and maintenance of its conservation status. The study is conducted to identify good practices for protection and management programs of selected World Heritage Sites as case studies.
