N2 - This paper outlines selected results from English Heritage's 'National Archaeological Identification Survey Upland Pilot' - a project which used aerial mapping to record all visible archaeology from the later prehistoric period to the 20th century in a project area covering parts of southern Cumbria and small areas of northern Lancashire, supported by site-based ground observation, limited analytical field survey, geophysical survey and archaeological excavation. This paper reports on the results from the middle part of the Lune Valley (between Middleton and Kirkby Lonsdale) relating solely to later prehistoric and Romano-British settlement sites, focussing on some examples in detail, and aiming to shed new light on their morphological variation and geographical distribution.
