Abstract / Description of output

By focusing mainly on incremental and predictable transitions, the existing literature on professional identity and identity change is of limited help in explaining identity work in situations of turmoil. The objective of this paper is therefore to shed a new light on how professionals maintain a coherent sense of who they are in situations of unexpected change in their working environment. More precisely, it proposes to investigate how professionals engage in ‘snap’ identity work to cope with the identity tensions that arise from the change. This will enable us to offer new insights on the dynamic nature of professional identities and the agility (or lack thereof) of professionals in maintaining a sense of purpose and coherence in fast changing environments.
