BBC News Online is one of the most popular news websites in the world, with enormous credibility in the UK and overseas, especially in the United States. It sits at the heart of the BBC’s broader efforts to respond to the challenges of commercialisation, digitalisation and convergence, whilst remaining mindful of its commitment to public service values. But this chapter uses an analysis of the Corporation’ use of NGO material within African news, to raise serious concerns about the ways in which the increased webcentricity of the corporation’s journalism is being shaped by a broader erosion of the firewall between commercial and editorial decision-making.
