N2 - This short chapter considers how all the elements discussed in Chapters 1–15 can be brought together to create the expert sport coach. It evaluates the tools coaches may implement at various stages of their coaching career to enable them to develop and progress. Some methods for appraising coaching practice and more extensive programme evaluation are suggested. High performance in sport has been attributed to innovations in sport science, technological advances, training systems and nutritional analysis. However, little attention has been given to the role of the coach in the advancement of sporting achievement, as there is a tendency to concentrate on scientific aspects that are perceived as easier to control.
