Abstract
Pyometra is uterine inflammation with accumulation of purulent material within the uterus and it is the most severe form of endometritis. Pyometra, especially closed cervix pyometra is a potentially life-threatening illness that may be associated with systemic sepsis, endotoxic shock, and a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) leading to organ failure. Renal compromise is commonly seen in dogs with pyometra, although this appears to be a rare occurrence in cats. The treatment of choice is ovariohysterectomy (OVH) as soon as possible, allowing for patient stabilization, although there has been a recent report of successful medical management in dogs with milder disease. Reported complications of pyometra include peritonitis and sepsis, uterine stump abscess, wound infections, renal disease, anemia, anorexia, icterus, splenic infarction, and thromboembolic disease. Although pyometra specifically affects the genitourinary system, it can have profound systemic effects.
