A pilot GIS based on linear quadtrees and a relational database is described. It consists of two parts: a spatial database of binary images represented as linear quadtrees; and a relational database of objects abstracted from the binary images and augmented by aspatial data provided by users. The two parts are integrally linked within the GIS. This allows users interactive access to explore spatial objects and relationships. Work is continuing to evaluate the potental applications of the pilot GIS with larger and more diverse types of data. -from Authors
