N2 - Professional Judgment and Decision Making (PJDM) explicitly recognises the complexity of coaching practice and puts a significant weighting on the decision-making capability of the individual practitioner and advocates for an expertise approach in practice. Supportive of enhancing the practical application of a PJDM approach for the coach developer (CD), in this chapter the authors seek to address the conceptual gap by considering the value of sense-making to the CD. The role of knowledge in the coaching process is well established, as is the need for a significant knowledge base across a range of domains. In response to the complex challenge presented to the CD, a variety of tools have been developed that aim to scaffold CD sense-making. Coach development is entering an interesting stage, whilst there is clear recognition of its overall value to the coach, across a number of domains, there remains an anti-intellectual approach to knowledge in many coaching communities.
