Abstract

'Cool Smoking' is the by-line, alongside Japanese scripts and graphics inside the book of matches, on the outer cover is an illustration; a small-scale piece of functional design.
8 artists and designers have provided images for the Natural American Spirit:
Nathan Vincent, Jonathan Gibbs, Yasutomo Ebisu, Jethro Haynes, Noritake, Ryudai Abe, Hitoshi Odajima, and Pyupiru.
My image is printed to 30mm x 34mm, a miniature format. The original wood engraving, 'Domus', is 60mm x 65mm, a fine art print that has been used by Sho Ink Press for this applied context. This translates as 'Home', for the practical and decorative purposes of the match-book. There is an underlying concept behind this work. It presents a spiral, with a heart at is centre. The outer line of the spiral has an arrow form. At the centre is a simple house, childlike, simple, clearly readable as an image with a path to its front door. The spiral suggests a puzzle or symbol, a vortex leading to the centre, but also radiating outwards.
