Abstract
Solos with support takes the model of ensemble with leader and displaces the dynamic slightly. Rather than follow the soloist to prop them up, the ensemble plays music around which a solo is wrapped. While writing, I was thinking about a particular group dynamic, one of superficial consensus. Whether it is colleagues appearing to agree about a point being made in a meeting, or countries aligning with the bloc’s direction, or social media comments righteously in-tune: our will to support is there, but perhaps we’re all just saying our own thing at sort-of the right time, in a way that seems sort-of aligned.
This is my first acoustic instrumental piece for several years. I usually work in a very detailed way with live electronics, creating a software environment that musicians can explore in performance. For this piece, my interests in computer music were expressed differently. I wrote my musical ideas into computer code using the Python programming language. This then underwent several further process and edits in order to be converted into the scores that the players are performing from today.
