Abstract / Description of output
Acoustic ecology is typically concerned with sound and listening located at specific sites where the focus of attention is the auditory phenomena themselves. The ecological perspective thus seeks to explore the consequences of the presence, absence and co-existence of auditory phenomena as evidence of the evolution of a specific stratum of lived existence. This paper will focus on the temporal aspect of sound phenomena, exploring the ways in which sound embodies time, and proposing that sound phenomena create time as a specific set of relational properties with meaning. This implies that the ecology of sound creates a parallel ecology of time, with consequences for the perception and experience of living beings. The paper will explore the ecological niches of time, and discuss the evolutionary pressures evident in shifting experiences of time through sound.
