Abstract / Description of output

This article focuses on what comparative sources from later historical periods (principally the 16th – 19th centuries) reveal about quarry logistics, workforces, and operational costs at stone quarries. The implications of these data are then examined in relation to our understanding of Roman quarries. Our focus is on the range of workers (especially metal-workers), the composition and size of quarry work-teams, their organization, and the economic impact of their maintenance costs.
