While primary physical education has received increasing attention recently, this chapter suggests little of this attention stems from the subject’s perceived educational value. As such, it argues the need for a transformative agenda based on the belief that primary physical education is a complex and holistic educational endeavour that functions at three inter-related levels: as a subject area, integrating across the primary school curriculum and also acting as a catalyst for engagement in a physically active life. Re-orienting the curriculum, pedagogy and teacher’s professional learning, alongside a ‘shifting perspectives’ agenda are presented as ways forward for the subject area.
