Abstract

Using recorded oral interviews this is an account of life in and around Stranraer. Following the first interview, with Helen Davies who was 87 when interviewed in 1999, the book is arranged by theme:

Tattie howkers / Tramps and travellers / Agriculture and farming / Rural and urban living conditions / Shops and businesses / Community life / Education / Health / Travel and transport / War / Princess Victoria disaster / The storm of winter 1947-48 / Ghostly happenings / Photograph archive held by the Stranraer and District Local History Trust plus an Appendix - Stranraer and District Local History Trust and List of Interviewees.

This is the first book based on the EERC research programme, Dumfries and Galloway: A Regional Ethnology - part of a wider research programme The Regional Ethnology of Scotland Project.
