Abstract

Cognitive neuroscience aims to understand the relationship between the nervous system and mental processes. This endeavour requires many research tools and approaches, and cooperation and communication across diverse researchers and teams. Bernard Forscher used the metaphor of “chaos in the brickyard” – a proliferation of well-crafted bricks, but of such varied sizes and shapes that there is no way to assemble them into buildings – to illustrate that the mere accumulation of empirical observations does not progress us towards scientific understanding (Forscher, 1963; see also Newell, 1973).
