Abstract

Objective: To critically review the origins of grounded theory and its relationship to nursing, analyzing its historical evolution and contribution to nursing knowledge. Development: The historical and epistemological origins of grounded theory as a methodology in the social sciences are defined and analyzed. Likewise, the historical connection between grounded theory and nursing is analyzed, an aspect that has been little addressed in the literature. This article then continues with a critical analysis of its epistemological evolution in its constructivist variant, distinctive characteristics, and critique. The article concludes with some reflections given the gap in the Spanish-speaking world. Conclusions: The complexities of nursing work require today more than ever methodologies that allow not only the description and understanding of the contribution of nurses to people's health, but above all, to explain the complexity of how these care processes occur.
