The city as new:a choreographic view of the urban space: 1st International Dance Conference of the Association of the Greek Choreographers

Abstract

Choreography can be considered as an approach to the understanding of space and, more specifically, an approach to the study of the organisation of space. This is an area of commonality with architecture and urban planning and this presentation will discuss what choreography could offer to these disciplines, as a result of its focus on the role of movement in space. If choreographic techniques can be applied on materials other than the dancing body, the traditional notion of choreography expands in an interdisciplinary direction and an interesting framework for productive exchanges between architectural and choreographic practices becomes available. The phenomenological approaches of architects Steven Holl, Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Zumthor and Daniel Libeskind emphasise the importance of perception in the experience of the architectural space. These approaches can be revisited from within a choreographic perspective, due to how viewers experience the presence and materiality of buildings or any architecturally organised spaces more generally, as a result of how they move in relation to such spaces. Peter Eisenman’s emphasis on the dynamic aspects of the architectural process offers an additional opportunity for interesting links between choreographic and architectural processes. The notion of ‘choreographic environments’ will be introduced in this presentation as a tool that brings together choreographic and architectural approaches for a more dynamic understanding of the urban space and addresses the interdisciplinary character of certain aspects of contemporary choreography.
