The essence of Islam

This paper takes a look at the core teachings of Islam and explores the basics of Islamic spirituality. It seeks to present an honest look at the issues of practising one's faith and spirituality within a secular environment. The discussion also touches upon some relevant political considerations from a historical perspective. These points serve to set the context and to expound upon the global milieu that Muslims find themselves in. The story of Islamic faith and spirituality is charted from its inception to the present day. It is a story of the ebbing and flowing of faith; the highs and lows of one's spirituality; at one moment being present with the Divine, at another experiencing the very depths of spiritual poverty. This is also a love story between Man and God and the fickleness of human spirit and of the battle that all of us face; the personal whims and desires that rage inside us against doing the right thing and being selfless in our actions. In essence, this discussion is about how we cope and find our way in a world increasingly fixated with material well being.
