The European Nude, 1400-1650

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Challenging traditional interpretations, this essay sets out a new interpretation of the domination of the nude form in Europe in the Renaissance and Early Modern period. The essay argues for two main artistic approaches to the nude in the period, called here the "academic" and the "erotic" nude. These approaches are grounded in beliefs about antiquity, and closely linked to the gender of the model as well as ideas about the role of art. The essay traces ideas about artistic nudes from their inception in Italy through their adaptation in the Netherlands and Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and looks at patterns of display and censorship in these countries during the Reformation and Counter-Reformation.
