N2 - This article explores key factors that can impact upon the ability of post-war universities to engage in open debates and acts of critical voice, drawing on semi-structured interviews conducted in universities in Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka. The main factors identified relate to the entanglement of universities with political forces, academic networks and associated practices of social sanctioning, and the social histories of university communities. I argue that grappling with these factors enables an enhanced understanding of the limitations on critical voice in conflict-affected universities and, thus, of the conditions under which universities might contribute to peacebuilding and recovery.
