The Memory Palace: A Book of Lost Interiors

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

‘The Memory Palace’, commissioned in April 2011, has grown out of a series of peer-reviewed journal papers; notably, ‘the Memory Palace and House of Life’ in ‘Interiors: Design, Architecture and Culture’ (Berg, 2010).
Building on narrative methodologies developed in Hollis' 'Secret Lives of Buildings' (2009), this is an experimental anthology of vanished rooms, remembered in one surviving one. Building on ‘La Filosofia D’Arredamento’ (Praz 1947)and ‘The Art of Memory’ (Yates 1967), this book re-imagines interior historiography as the story of ephemeral meetings and events; the traces they leave behind them; and ultimately the story of the art of memory itself.
