Abstract

The oppidum of Monte Bernorio is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Iron Age in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The archaeological fieldwork, which has been carried out continuously since 2004, has provided important information about the fortifications, the internal structure and everyday life in this settlement, which was inhabited from the End Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age. Monte Bernorio was conquered and destroyed in the course of Augustus' campaigns against Cantabrians and Asturias. After that, a Roman castellum was built on the same site.
