Abstract
This article, based on a talk given in November 2023, seeks to place contemporary Scotland in the context of broader social and political change. The last quarter of a century, marked by a devolved Parliament, has also seen the rise of increasingly aggressive individualism, a retreat from the social, and a populist right which threatens a crisis for democracy globally. Where, and how, does Scotland stand in these contexts?.
