The representation of breaking panels in hydrocode calculations

When a shock wave strikes a building the dynamic loading may be greatly reduced by the failure of windows or fragile wall sections. This is because once the shock wave enters the structure the pressure difference across the walls is reduced. In order to adequately represent the failure of fragile panels a model of their mechanical behaviour when subjected to blast loading is required. The model must be simple, since the inclusion of a more complex model in a hydrocode is likely to result in large computer run times, thus prohibiting the use of the hydrocode as a practical assessment tool.
