Abstract

Technological development was at the heart of Boulez's view of 'musical research' which underpinned his vision for the creation of IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. This chapter explores Boulez's technological viewpoint, his use of technologies in his own compositional work, and his situation of musical research within the dominant discourses and developments of the later part of the 20th century.
