Abstract

Little is currently known about the developmental origins of the immune system and the lineage restriction processes that lead to its establishment. In this issue, Boiers et al. (2013) now demonstrate immune-restricted potential originating from the yolk sac even before the emergence of the first hematopoietic stem cells.
