Abstract / Description of output

This chapter examines social complexity in an imaginary village, described by the folkloric ‘Versus de Unibove’ which is preserved in a single eleventh-century manuscript. It further explores what this tale’s text reveals about how monks – in this case the monks of Gembloux – sought to integrate rural life worlds into structures of economic and ideological control, as well as considering the limits to their capacity to do so.
