Abstract

This chapter looks at the profession of coaching and coach development within Europe. As the title suggests there are as many different systems and approaches as there are countries within Europe. Resulting from the origins of sport, this still has an influence on the evolution of coaching and coach development with some countries having more mature systems than others. This chapter discusses how different countries manage the process of coach development, highlighting the diversity through numerous case studies. These examples are carefully selected from different areas of Europe, presenting areas such as selection processes and education, steps to professionalism and coach development systems. There are instances of legislative processes governing coaching and coach development as well as other structures that operate largely independently.
