Abstract
TREE AT MY WINDOW, solo exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh.8-27th September 2011.
9th one-man showing at this gallery presenting forty recent works: wood engravings, pattern designs, book illustrations, web illustrations, paintings & drawings.
The over-arching concept rested upon one poem by Frost, Tree at My Window, for which I had made an illustration, one of twenty three that were published in the book. In this engraving, the connection between the tree, framed and interrupted by the regularity of the window frames, allows for abstract and pattern-based relationships of form. There is an ambiguous interplay between the idea of 'real', 'illusory', and 'seen' forms, depicted in sharp, graphic detail. The imaged does not have any illusion of deep space, although there is some tonal modelling; it is more concerned with positive and negative space in two dimensions. In various works, the exhibition showed interpretations of landscape, nature, interior space, and the depiction of objects in space. These formal concerns were explored in an abstract mode, using line, colour, and surface qualities. Working methods included oil on wood panel, prepared with gesso, canvas, and various paper surfaces. A set of wood engravings included illustrations for the poems of Frost, and various additional prints exploring imaginative and symbolic themes. As an exhibition with a title, a theme, all the works demonstrated a particular palette, line quality and compositional consistency running between works designed to be seen as self-referential artefacts, or those made specifically for the book or the page. This relationship intrigues me and has allowed for improvisation as well as the process of working to a prescribed brief.
Over a period of twenty years or more, my solo exhibitions at the Open Eye Gallery have shown the full range of my work, with a wide audience.
