Abstract

Universal Matter was shown at Inspace, Edinburgh as part of thier City Screen 2021 programme, 19th - 28th March 2021
The work was created collaboratively via prior discussions within the Asteria Creative group, a group of artists, physisists, sound designers and animators with an interest in Space. "Universal Matter explores curiosity and care as drivers for space exploration. Moving away from pessimistic narratives of humanity leaving a broken Earth behind, Universal Matter uses data visualisation to bring to light the interconnectivity between human realms of experience and the perhaps more numerous arenas we play no part in or have limited relevance." from Asteria Creative website Universal Matter introduction https://www.asteria-space.com/first-phase
The work was a live interactive visualisation of a mix of real time sensor data inputs that was shown on the 7 street visible screens of Inspace. Inputs from online API’s, archival audio samples, and our own sensors within and outwith the gallery fed through Touchdesigner software to create responsive visualisations from different layers of preception from the self out to the local star, the Sun. Data samples and layers were roughly based on Yuval Harari’s book 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind'.
