Wave enhancement due to structure blockage in semi-submersibles

Results of an experimental study of the effect of two bottom- mounted vertical cylinders on an incident monochromatic wave field are presented. The cylinder diameter:spacing ratios are representative of semi-submersible offshore drilling rigs. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether wave enhancement due to structure blockage caused a significant enhancement of wave elevations in the vicinity of such structures. Physical model tests have been performed to quantify wave elevation enhancement and wave runup on the cylinders exposed to monochromatic waves. It is shown that cylinder pairs can cause significant enhancement of the local wave field and that extreme amplitude enhancement -jetting - of up to a factor of 2.5 is possible
