Abstract
A critical perspective on the evolution of English Studies at Edinburgh from its origin in the eighteenth century to the contemporary state of the subject. The essay begins with Hugh Blair's appointment to the first Chair of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres in the world, and considers the significance of this development in the context of disciplinary and institutional evolution in British higher education
