Edinburgh Research Explorer

Abstract

In collaboration with Scottish Language Dictionaries (SLD), I will create opportunties for non-academic audiences to engage with two aspects of humanities research: (a) methods in lexicography (specifically how words and their meanings find their way into dictionaries and how words and their meanings become obsolete); and (b) the status of Scots and its relationship to English.

By supporting participants through the analysis of texts not previously read by editors of the Dictionar o the Scots Leid (‘Dictionary of the Scots Language’) we will provide a genuine opportunity to discover new words and previously unrecorded meanings.

These activities will be organised as a series called Wird Hunt! ('Word Hunt!) which will take place in three local libraries in areas of high deprivation. The format allows for both passive and active engagement lasting anywhere from five minutes to two hours.

The team will consist of myself (lead applicant and part-time CEO of SLD), three lexicographers from SLD, and two students from the University of Edinburgh.
