Abstract

Bridg’it is the name of a network in the social science of food, but also of an energy and project, seeking to foster a current of work and exchanges both between researchers and postgraduate students over the years to come, and consolidate intellectual and friendship links when the political and institutional links across the Channel and North Sea are being severed… The network is building on earlier bilateral exchanges between SOLAL (INRA, Paris) and FRIED (School of Social and Political Science, University of Edinburgh); between SOLAL and IFRO (University of Copenhagen); and between IFRO and FRIED. It really started, as a network and project, with a two-day workshop in Gif sur Yvette (Paris), which gathered 16 researchers and postgraduate students from the 3 groups, on 16-18 May 2017. Paper-comments sessions alternated with joint work and brainstorming sessions; and video analysis alternated with photographic material on bought products and advertising campaigns, regressions with interview material, and maps with network analysis. Three themes loosely guided our collective elaborations: collective meals; social science of taste and flavour; and conflicts. But many connections ‘bridged’ papers across themes. Outcomes - Focused peer feed-back on draft research proposals - Focused peer feed-back on draft papers - Advice on subsequent stages of research and methodological tools - Advice on possible theoretical frameworks for making sense of empirical material - Plans for common publications across teams - Overview of existing funding opportunities for future collaborations
