In Scotland, researchers worked with people aged 70 and older, asking about where they lived and their access to green space since their childhood in the 1930s. These data were analysed together with archival maps and evidence of housing conditions, health and socio-economic status of different areas in Edinburgh and its local region throughout this period.

“We concluded that frequent access topublic parks from childhood through to adulthood may help to slow down the rate of cognitive decline in later life. This finding was strongest for women and those in the lowest socioeconomic groups”, said landscape architect Catharine Ward Thompson.

We found a similar conclusion for depression and anxiety. “Access to green space can help to reduce social inequalities in terms of health”, stated this director of OPENspace research.
