General areas of Interest: Italian Medieval and early Renaissance Art and Architecture, and their historical, social and intellectual context. Amongst my many and varied areas of interest are: Rome, as both a ‘place’ and an ‘idea’; artistic production and patronage, with particular attention to the relationship between religious and lay patronage; materiality; the use of media such as mosaic and sculpture to convey specific meanings; the cult of icons and relics, and their architectural, devotional and liturgical setting; the legacy of Antiquity and the Classical Tradition; the transmission of ideas and artistic exchanges; the reception of ancient Rome in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Another major research interest focuses on the Art and Architecture of the Mendicant Orders, and the relationship between artists belonging to religious orders and the phenomenon of emergence of artistic identity in Italy.
