Current Research Interests

Research in the ECampbell group ranges from very fundamental studies of the ionisation mechanisms and electron dynamics in complex molecules in the gas phase to the potential applications of nanocarbon materials such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. The gas phase work involves the combination of femtosecond laser excitation/ionisation and velocity map imaging to simultaneously determine the photoelectron kinetic energies and angular distributions of the electrons. We are particularly interested in the interplay between thermal and direct photoionisation processes and in controlling the binding energies of diffuse Rydberg-like states in fullerene molecules via endohedral and exohedral functionalisation. Nanocarbon material research is concerned with fundamental studies of the growth and characterisation of carbon nanotubes and graphene and also in the manipulation and chemical functionalisation of these materials for porential applications such as carbon capture or gas sensing.
