I'm keen to supervise PhD students (practice, theory, or practice/theory) who are interested in experimental cinema, independent film, artists' film and video, queer visual culture, film philosophy, and queer theory.

Qualifications

MA by Research in Film Studies, University of Newcastle (awarded 1998); DPhil in Media Studies, University of Sussex (awarded 2004).

Current Research Interests

I am a theorist and historian of queer visual culture. My specialist field in film studies, with a particular focus on experimental cinema and artists' film and video. I am the Project Leader of a three year pan-European project called 'Cruising the Seventies: Unearthing Pre-HIV/AIDS Queer Sexual Cultures' (CRUSEV, http://www.crusev.ed.ac.uk), funded by HERA and the European Commission, which has research teams in Germany, Poland, Spain, and the UK. I am currently completing a book manuscript based on research undertaken while I was a Chancellor's Fellow, 'The Exhausted Screen: Cinema, Boredom, Stasis'.

Biography

Before taking up my position at the University of Edinburgh, I was the coordinator of postgraduate studies at The Glasgow School of Art (2008-2012). Prior to this, I was a senior lecturer in screen studies at the University of Bristol (2005-2008).

Research students

I am currently supervising eight PhD students: Sequoia Barnes, Scott Baxter, Tom Day, Roberto Filippello, Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay, Bart Simpson, Jared Taylor, and Alberta Whittle.

Research Interests

My research and writing is mainly concerned with experimental cinema, and artists working with film and video. Recent book publications include Warhol in Ten Takes, co-edited with Gary Needham (British Film Institute/Palgrave, 2013) and Film Studies: A Global Introduction, co-authored with Kay Dickinson, Lisa Patti, and Amy Villarejo (Routledge, 2015). Recent journal articles include essays on cinema and waiting, James Benning and taxidermy, and slow horror films.
