Biography

I am a Senior Clinical Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and Honorary Consultant Hepatologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. During medical training in Southampton, I undertook a PhD on the reversibility of liver fibrosis as an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellow. I relocated to Edinburgh in 2008 as an Academy of Medical Sciences/Health Foundation Clinician Scientist fellow. My research interests include mechanisms of liver fibrosis and fibrosis regression, portal hypertension, noninvasive biomarkers (including liver imaging), and the development of new therapies in chronic liver disease. Current projects: CI for the first clinical evaluation of Serelaxin as a haemodynamic modulator in cirrhosis (Novartis sponsored/funded); CI for a CSO-funded trial evaluating MRI based treatment response biomarkers for portal hypertension; co-PI for a GlaxoSmithKline DPAc (Discovery Partnerships with Academia) to discover and develop an anti-fibrotic medicine for liver fibrosis; PI in Edinburgh for a collaborative Innovate UK-funded multiparameter liver MRI trial. I currently supervise x2 PhD fellows, x2 clinical research fellows and x1 postdoctoral scientist. Engagement with Pharma and biotech sectors is a high priority theme. My clinical activity includes inpatient and outpatient general hepatology and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy.
