Current Research Interests

Exchange of green house gases between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere: in particular, the measurement and modelling of emissions of nitrous oxide from agricultural and forest soils, the emission of methane from rice fields and wetlands, and the microbial uptake of methane by soils. Gains and losses of carbon (as carbon dioxide) by soils, and the importance of soil as a sink for CO2. Methods of estimating total greenhouse gas emissions that result from land use practices, and strategies for reducing the emissions. Emissions of methyl bromide and similar molecules that cause ozone depletion. Use of iron-rich materials to remove phosphate/heavy metals/arsenic from water. Current research projects funded by NERC, BBSRC, EPSRC, Royal Society, EU and Scottish Executive.
