1993– Research Fellow, Institute for Historical Dialectology, Linguistics and English Language

1991- Honorary Research Fellow, Department of English Language, University of Glasgow. Seminars to Honours students.

1987–93 Research Fellow (half-time), Gayre Institute for Medieval English and Scottish Dialectology, English Language Department, University of Edinburgh, now (since 1992) The Institute for Historical Dialectology, University of Edinburgh.

1985–87 Based in Boston, Massachusetts. Member of the inter-university medievalists’ seminar group, Faculty of English, Harvard University.

1979–87 Research Fellow. Principal research work: assisted with the analysis, mapping and
organisation of texts for A Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English, 4 vols. (Aberdeen, 1986).

1978 Research Associate then Research Fellow, Middle English Dialect Project, University of Edinburgh.

1974–76 Tutor in English Language, University of Edinburgh.


1998 Middle English palaeography component of University of Edinburgh interdepartmental MSc in Medieval Europe: Language and Text, 10–20 contact hours.
1999–2006 Palaeography and text editing component of University of Edinburgh’s interdepartmental MSc in Medieval Studies. Varying numbers (2–8) full-time students plus variable number of others auditing. 12–20 contact hours.
1999–2005 Course option on the Principles and Applications of Medieval Dialectology for the MSc in Medieval Studies (with Keith Williamson and Derek Britton 40–50%).
2003 In the English Language department’s taught MSc in Variation in English and Scots Past and Present, large contribution to the core course.
2005–2011 Three lectures on Middle English in the first year undergraduate course on the History of English.

2006–2011 Linguistics and English Language, taught MSc in English Language, option Principles and Applications of Medieval Dialectology. Course organizer. Teaching with Keith Williamson — 50%. 2010–2011 also ran as Hons course.
2006–2011 Medieval Studies MSc Palaeography and Codicology 2, Middle English: full semester —100%
2007– Linguistics and English Language, Honours Middle English: with Linda van Bergen and Keith Williamson — 40–50%.
