Research Interests

Recently my research has followed two broad themes – (i) next generation supercomputing and data intensive technologies and (ii) the development of novel knowledge exchange approaches to the challenges of business and society. The first category saw the end of my Grid Computing research which culminated in leadership of €16m NextGRID FP6 project, the successful completion of the ‘Maxwell’ FPGA supercomputer, development of the EDIM1 data intensive computer and the data analytics technologies needed to use it through leadership of the ADMIRE FP7 project.

My current focus is Exascale computing through leadership of the €12m CRESTA FP7 project. The second category has been focussed on continuing to develop EPCC’s highly successful industry programme and developing bids to the EC’s EIT for an Edinburgh-led Knowledge Innovation Community. This work developed a €6.2 billion KIC bid in 2010 and is now developing a new bid for 2014 focussed on Healthy Living and Active Ageing. I also lead the €22m FORTISSIMO FP7 project which is providing an HPC Cloud of modelling and simulation resources for manufacturing SMEs across Europe.

Teaching

I teach on EPCC's MSc in High Performance Computing. My lectures focus on my research interests in next generation High Performance Computing research - currently the challenge that Exascale poses - and data intensive computing.
