Main research interests: film aesthetics, film and philosophy and the exploration of film form in relation to counter-culture and marginality (focusing in particular, but not exclusively, on French cinema). The publications resulting from this research address a wide range of issues (cinema of the senses, the spectacular and the anti-spectacular; gender and race representations, postcolonialism, exclusion and abjection) relating to film form, film history and strategies of representation.

Research activity

To date, Martine Beugnet has completed four books: Sexualité, marginalité, contrôle: cinéma français contemporain (L'Harmattan, 2000), which includes a series of in-depth analysis of key films of the 1990s, Claire Denis (M.U.P, 2004), the first study of the remarkable work of this important filmmaker, published as part of Manchester University Press' series on French Directors, and Proust at the Movies (Ashgate, 2005), written in collaboration with Dr Marion Schmid. Her fourth book, entitledCinema and Sensation: French Film and the Art of Transgression Cinema and Sensation: French Film and the Art of Transgression is published by Edinburgh University Press.(http://screen.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/50/3/349) She has also written articles and essays on a wide range of contemporary cinema topics.

Martine Beugnet is also co-editor, with John Orr, of EUP's new series of monographs in Film Studies.

Dr Beugnet welcomes postgraduate applications relating to her research interests in all forms of cinema.
