Dr Susam-Saraeva is available to supervise PhD projects in several areas within translation studies, but especially on translation and music, translation and cyberactivism, non-professionals translating and interpreting, translation of literary and cultural theories, and translation and gender.

  • PhD in Comparative Literature (University College London, UK)
  • Freelance literary and technical translator.
  • Research fellow and part-time lecturer at the MonAKO Multilingual Communication Programme and Christina Institute for Women's Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland.
  • Part-time lecturer at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
  • Since 2003, lecturer at the university of Edinburgh, affiliated with Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.

Research Interests

Dr Susam-Saraeva's research interests have included:

  • Gender and translation
  • Retranslation
  • Translation of literary and cultural theories
  • Research methodology in translation studies
  • Internationalizing translation studies

 She is currently working on three areas of research:

  • Translation and popular music
  • Translation and online activism
  • Non-professionals translating and interpreting (often within the context of social movements)


Dr Susam-Saraeva has been teaching mainly at postgraduate level translation studies courses (e.g. Translation Studies 1, Translation Studies 2, Research in Translation Studies, Portfolio of Written Translation Exercises 1 and 2, Translation and Creativity, Gender and Translation). She specializes in a variety of socio-cultural approaches to translation.
