Abstract

This extended and illustrated version of the Annual Academic Lecture for Groam House Museum given by Ian Ralston in 1999, assesses the progress made in our understanding of Pictish hill-forts since the work of Richard Feachem in the 1950s and especially his presentation at the 1952 Problem of the Picts conference held in Dundee. This short study examines the hill-forts lying south and east of Inverness, the Pictish heartland, and asks what recent research has contributed to our knowledge of their location, architectural features, date, and so on. There is no inventory or gazetteer of sites; Ralston describes this as a `partial auditing exercise'.
